Abstract

The article looks into the major historical works covering one of the most difficult periods in Soviet national policy. From the beginning of the 1920s to the mid-1930s its priorities turned away from the values of internationalism and struggle against «Russian chauvinism» towards the appeal to the great past of Russia, its sovereignty and reliance on the Russian people as an «elder brother» in the family of Soviet peoples. The article analyzes the points of view of the most famous Russian and foreign authors on the so-called «the Russian turn». The analysis leads to conclusion that Russian researchers are not inclined to consider the external changes to be essential, changing anyhow the status of Russians, while foreign researchers pay much more attention to the changes in the status of Russians regarding these processes as russification.
