Abstract

This paper deals with the graphical and orthographic variants of the English language viewed through the history and the main trends of its development. Some modern factors influencing the English language are also described. English here is meant as the basic example of the spelling development of the old-written languages and those changes they faced in the course of time. At the end of the article there are some examples of the main spelling trends and the groups of words they cover.
