«TWO FACES» OF THE CATALAN REFERENDUM: POLITICAL FRAMING AS A PART OF THE STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE

The current political situation in Catalonia is characterized by the on-going conflict between the autonomous community and the official Madrid. A research interest is aspects of the struggle for independence. The referendums on the independence of the region from Spain, which took place in 2014 and in 2017, are in the focus of this interest. On the one hand, both referendums were held in the same contextual context. On the other hand, these referendums were presented in different ways in public discourse. The article explains the factors that influenced that using the frame-analysis method. This allows us to consider discursive practices in dynamics. The study led to the conclusion that a public change in the positioning of the referendum became possible as a result of interference from the situational factor. Such a factor was the pre-term regional parliamentary elections of 2015, which brought success to Catalan nationalists.
